Queenslanders demonstrate distrust in Crisafulli's abortion promises

The state's newly elected premier, David Crisafulli, has vowed to maintain the legalisation of terminations - however many fear the LNP leader's personal stance on the issue could mean eradication

The abortion topic became a heated one during the state election after Katter’s Australian Party leader Robbie Katter announced that his first step in Parliament would be to re-introduce his failed private member’s bill. Namely, the Termination of Live Births Amendment, which would see tougher restrictions placed on late-term abortions.

A move the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists say will also disproportionately impact rural and First Nations communities, cause emotional trauma for patients, and potentially spark a conscience vote.

In 2018, the Premier, and all but three LNP politicians, voted for terminations to remain criminalised.

More than one week into the new change in government, a collective anxiety within the community has risen on whether abortion will be placed back into the criminal code – with hundreds taking to Brisbane Square last Friday demanding for a women’s right to choose to remain legal.

This comes after Crisafulli’s consistent deflections of questions surrounding his own views and whether party members could have a conscience vote on the matter.
